Newborn Sleep Guide: Safe Sleep Practices
Newborn Sleep Guide: Safe Sleep Practices (2026)
Safe sleep saves lives. Follow these evidence-based guidelines for your newborn sleep safety.
ABC of Safe Sleep
Alone: Baby should sleep in their own space
Back: Always place baby on their back to sleep
Crib: Use a firm, flat sleep surface
Safe Sleep Environment
- Keep crib bare – no blankets, pillows, or toys
- Use a wearable blanket or sleep sack
- Maintain comfortable room temperature (68-72°F)
- Place crib away from windows and cords
Room Sharing vs Bed Sharing
The AAP recommends room sharing for the first 6 months, but never bed sharing. Keep baby close but in their own safe sleep space.
Red Flags
Contact your pediatrician if baby has difficulty breathing, bluish skin color, or is difficult to wake.
